CFE Exam Technical Requirements and FAQs

CFE Exam Technical Requirements and FAQs

  • Do I have to take all four exam sections the same way?
Each CFE Exam section is considered a separate exam in the Prometric system and must be scheduled as a separate appointment. You may take all four sections at a testing center, remotely or using a combination of both options. Please be aware, however, that there is a $10 fee for each appointment at a testing center.
  • What are the computer requirements to take the CFE Exam?

To test remotely, you need access to a:

    • Computer capable of installing a lightweight app
    • Webcam capable of a 360-degree environmental check*
    • Microphone
    • Stable internet connection**
    • Private Location

Additional remote proctoring technical requirements include:

    • Screen resolution: 1024 X 768
    • Operating system: Windows 8.1 or above/MacOS 10.13 or above including Mac OS 13.3.1 Ventura (MacOS 13.0-13.2 Ventura are not supported at this time)***
    • Web browser: Latest version of Google Chrome
    • Webcam resolution: 640 X 480p
    • Microphone: Enabled
    • Download speed: 1.0 mbps

*The webcam can be external or built into a laptop, but you must be able to move it around to conduct a full room scan.

**Please position your device where you can receive the strongest signal. For the best experience, please use an Ethernet cable to connect directly to the router, and make sure there is no additional load on your Wi-Fi connection from other users such as streaming videos, music, or games. Lack of signal strength during your exam may cause you to lose connection to our system (your exam). No VPNs or virtual machines are supported.

***Please note iPad/Android tablets and Chromebooks are not currently supported. Microsoft tablets (Surface or similar) can be used only when configured in laptop mode.

Once you schedule your remote proctored exam, be sure to check your system by accessing the demo exam. This demo exam includes the enhanced system check for ProProctor (remote proctoring application) to better detect any issues before your exam day. This will test your operating system for compatibility to install and run the ProProctor application and ensure the launch of your remote exam. Failure to do so can result in delays in exam times, and possible reschedule fees.

Please note, you will have to complete the system readiness check, download the ProProctor application and launch your exam in order to access the demo exam and enhanced system check.

  • Can I take the exam on my work computer?

For remote testing, we generally do not recommend using a work computer or VPN network due to potential firewall, permissions and security settings that might not be compatible with the software. Although some candidates have success testing from a work computer, we suggest using a personal computer or choosing a test center to complete your exams. If you choose to test remotely on a corporate computer, make sure you review the following instructions:

    PCs
    Macs

Connecting your computer through a VPN (corporate or personal) will limit performance of the exam delivery software and may cause the software to block your access completely. You will need to disable your VPN prior to your exam. Reach out to your company’s IT support team for assistance on identifying your VPN and disabling it. If you choose to test from the office, we strongly recommend you involve your IT team to resolve any issues, including potential firewall issues, long before test day.

  • What if my computer doesn't meet the specified requirements?
If you are unable to access a computer that meets the specified requirements, a testing center might be a better option for you. Locate a Prometric test center near you or register for an in-person review course.
  • Can I take the exam in a public place, such as a library?
Your remote testing environment must meet specific requirements and conditions in order to test. Your testing location must be indoors (walled), well lit and free from background noise and disruptions. No third party may be present in the room or enter the room for the duration of the exam. If this occurs, your exam may be terminated and/or your results invalidated. If you are unable to find a location that meets these requirements, you should schedule your exam appointments at an in-person testing center.
  • Can I take the exam on an iPad?
The CFE Exam is not compatible with iPads. However, the online CFE Exam Prep Course can still be accessed using an iPad.
  • What can I expect during my security and environmental checks for remote proctoring appointments?
Prometric takes exam security very seriously and wants to ensure that all candidates are subject to the same high standards. Remote proctoring environment checks are very thorough and include a full scan of the room where you are testing, your desk/table area, your chair, the floor around you, your arms and hands, pockets and more. You will not be permitted to wear jewelry or have any notes or electronic devices near you. You also might be asked to remove or cover nearby clutter with a blanket or sheet.

To ensure a smooth testing experience, we recommend taking some time to clean up your testing area prior to your appointment. Your workstation and surrounding area must be free of pens, paper, electronic devices, etc. No content that could potentially provide an unfair advantage during your exam, including those posted on walls or within your immediate area, should be present during your exam session. It is also important to make sure you have a flat surface to test on, an actual stool or chair and a private room with four walls and a door.

If you do not feel comfortable with these requirements or feel like you will not be able to successfully meet them, testing at a Prometric testing center might be a better option for you. The ACFE will be happy to work with you to make sure your testing experience is as positive as possible while still adhering to testing industry best practices.
  • What happens if I experience technical difficulties when taking my exam through remote proctoring? Who should I contact?
If you experience any technical problems with your exam, contact Prometric through their online chat service. You can speak with an agent directly by access the Prometric Help page and clicking the chat icon on the bottom right of the screen. Chat support will also be available at the top of the screen within the Proproctor software. All remote proctoring appointments include onboarding support from a live person who will be doing your security and environmental checks. This person will be able to provide additional guidance.

If you are unable to successfully complete your exam due to technical issues, you might need to reschedule your appointment. Please contact the ACFE for guidance and a new exam eligibility via email at MemberServices@ACFE.com or call +1 (512) 478-9000 or (800) 245-3321. If you are unable to resolve your computer issues, you might need to schedule any remaining exam sections at a testing center.
  • If I have an online exam booked for remote proctoring, how can I change it to a testing center (or vice versa)?
If you wish to change your exam plans and have already scheduled an appointment, you will need to reschedule it. Please be aware, however, fees might apply depending on how much time remains before your scheduled appointment.
  • What kind of photo should I use?
At the time of your appointment, you will be required to present a valid, government-issued ID (e.g., a driver’s license, national ID card or passport). The ID must include a photo and identifying information.
