How did you hear about the Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship? What made you decide to apply?
I first became aware of the Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship through emails from the ACFE Foundation, which started arriving in my inbox as early as 2021. Initially, I did not pay much attention to these invitations, perhaps because I was not fully ready to take that next step in my professional journey. However, something changed on September 18, 2023, when I received another email invitation. This time, I felt a strong conviction that the timing was right and that applying for the scholarship could be a crucial turning point in my career.
One of the main reasons I decided to apply was the recognition and professional advancement that I observed in past recipients. I had noticed that winning this scholarship often led to enhanced visibility on professional networks like LinkedIn, which is particularly important in a field like anti-fraud, where the vital work we do can sometimes go unnoticed. The scholarship represented not just financial support but also an opportunity to gain recognition, connect with other professionals in the field and enhance my credibility and career prospects in the anti-fraud community.
How did you become passionate about fighting fraud?
My passion for fighting fraud is something that has been with me for as long as I can remember. Much like how professionals in fields such as addiction recovery often find their calling through personal experiences, I believe that my drive to combat fraud is something innate, a core part of who I am. From a very young age, I was acutely aware of the injustice caused by dishonesty. I saw how undeserving individuals could manipulate situations to their advantage, taking what was not rightfully theirs and, in doing so, depriving others who genuinely needed those resources. This sense of unfairness deeply resonated with me and planted the seeds of my commitment to fighting fraud.
My passion was further fueled when I enrolled in a Fraud Examination course from West Virginia University on Coursera in 2020. The course opened my eyes to the complexities of fraud, especially through Cressey’s
Fraud Triangle, which explains the psychological and situational factors that lead individuals to commit fraud. Understanding these dynamics not only deepened my resolve but also provided me with the tools and knowledge to approach fraud prevention and detection more effectively. The course reinforced my belief that combating fraud is not just about following rules; it is about protecting resources, ensuring fairness and upholding integrity in every sphere of life.
What advice do you have for students who are interested in applying for the scholarship?
If you are considering applying for the Ritchie-Jennings Memorial Scholarship, my advice is simple: do not hesitate. This scholarship is more than just financial aid; it is a gateway to numerous professional opportunities. For me, receiving the scholarship was a pivotal moment. Just two months after being named one of the 2024-2025 recipients, I went on to become a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), a credential that has significantly boosted my career. The recognition that comes with this scholarship has opened doors I had not even considered before—I have been approached by professionals and organizations interested in my research and eager to collaborate.
Beyond the scholarship itself, I strongly recommend getting involved with the ACFE and your local chapters. The ACFE offers a wealth of resources, including webinars, training sessions and networking events that are invaluable for anyone serious about a career in anti-fraud. Being active in your local chapter also allows you to build professional relationships and find mentors who can guide you on your journey.
